
TL;DR
We have been trained to associate lemon, pine, lavender and floral fragrances with cleanliness. For generations, advertising has taught us that a clean home should have a particular smell.
Lemon means a sparkling kitchen. Pine means disinfected floors. Lavender means freshly washed sheets. Floral fragrances mean a clean bathroom.
We have become so accustomed to these artificial signals that a home without fragrance may not seem properly clean—even when it is.
But what if that reassuring “clean smell” is actually evidence that we have added another form of pollution to our indoor environment?
Research presented at the 2026 fall meeting of the American Chemical Society suggests that fragrance compounds released by household cleaning products can create extremely high concentrations of airborne nanoparticles inside the home.
These particles are invisible. We cannot smell the particles themselves, and we cannot see them floating in the air.
But we may be breathing them.
What happens when we use scented cleaners?

Many fragranced cleaning products release volatile chemical compounds known as terpenes.
These include:
- Limonene, commonly associated with lemon and citrus fragrances
- Pinene, which produces a pine-like smell
- Linalool, often used to create lavender and floral fragrances
- Thymol, associated with thyme and some “natural” disinfectants
Terpenes also occur naturally in forests and plants. That fact is sometimes used to suggest that fragranced products containing them must be harmless.
But location and concentration matter.
Outdoors, these compounds are released into an enormous volume of moving air. Inside a home—particularly one with closed windows—they can accumulate at much higher concentrations.
Once released indoors, the fragrance compounds can react with ozone entering from outside or produced by certain electrical and air-treatment devices. This chemical reaction can rapidly create vast numbers of new nanoparticles.
Purdue University researchers have found that fragranced products do not merely add a pleasant smell to a room. They actively alter the chemistry of the indoor air.
Billions or trillions of newly formed particles
Researchers conducted their experiments in Purdue University’s specially constructed “tiny house laboratory.” It contains the ordinary features of a home—including a kitchen, bathroom and flooring—but is equipped with highly sensitive instruments capable of detecting particles as small as one nanometre.
When scented products were used, the fragrance chemicals quickly reacted with ozone and formed enormous numbers of nanoparticles.
Earlier work from the same Purdue research team estimated that between 100 billion and 10 trillion nanoparticles could be deposited in a person’s respiratory system during only 20 minutes of exposure to scented products.
Because these particles are extraordinarily small, they can travel deep into the respiratory system. Researchers are investigating whether some may subsequently move beyond the lungs to other parts of the body.
The precise long-term health effects of breathing these newly formed chemical mixtures are still being studied. However, the discovery raises an obvious question:
Why deliberately create billions of extra airborne particles inside the place where we live, sleep and breathe?

Perhaps the most confronting comparison is the estimated number of particles inhaled during ordinary household cleaning.
Researchers calculated that the respiratory dose produced when fragranced cleaners react with indoor ozone could be comparable to—or even greater than—the particle exposure experienced beside a busy road.
This does not necessarily mean that the particles from cleaning products are chemically identical to vehicle exhaust. Their toxicity may differ, and more research is needed to understand their biological effects.
Nevertheless, the comparison demonstrates the extraordinary quantity of particles that can be created by an activity most of us consider healthy: cleaning the house.
By the time we finish cleaning and notice that satisfying lemon or pine fragrance, we may already have inhaled a substantial dose of newly formed particles.
“Natural fragrance” may create the same problem
Replacing an artificial fragrance with an essential oil does not necessarily solve the problem.
Essential oils naturally contain terpenes. It is these aromatic compounds that give eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, orange and pine oils their familiar fragrances.
The important issue is not simply whether a fragrance originated in a plant or a laboratory. It is what happens when concentrated aromatic compounds are released into an enclosed room and react with the other chemicals already present in the air.
Previous Purdue research found that essential-oil diffusers, air fresheners, disinfectants and fragranced sprays can all generate significant numbers of nanoscale particles. Scented wax melts can also produce nanoparticle pollution despite creating no flame or visible smoke.
“Natural” does not automatically mean chemically inactive.
The research may underestimate our total exposure
The recent cleaning study focused on what happens during a cleaning session. It did not attempt to measure every fragranced product used throughout a typical day.
Consider the combined mixture that may be present in an ordinary home:
- Scented laundry detergent
- Fabric softener
- Dryer sheets
- Perfume and aftershave
- Deodorant
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Hair products
- Scented candles and wax melts
- Essential-oil diffusers
- Air fresheners
- Toilet sprays
- Floor cleaners
- Surface sprays
- Disinfectants
We may use several of these products before we even begin cleaning.
Each contributes more volatile compounds to an indoor chemical environment that is far more complicated than most of us realise.
How to clean without filling the air with fragrance
Reducing this exposure does not require us to stop cleaning. It means separating genuine cleanliness from perfume.
Choose genuinely fragrance-free products wherever possible. “Unscented” does not always mean fragrance-free; sometimes additional chemicals are used to mask the original smell. Check the ingredient information rather than relying solely on the front label.
Other sensible steps include:
- Open windows and doors while cleaning.
- Keep the room ventilated after cleaning.
- Avoid spraying products unnecessarily into the air.
- Apply cleaners directly to a cloth where practical.
- Use the smallest effective amount.
- Avoid combining several fragranced products during one cleaning session.
- Be cautious with ozone-generating air cleaners and some UV-C disinfection devices.
- Choose simple cleaning products with fewer unnecessary ingredients.
- Stop using fragrance as the test of whether something is clean.
Cleanliness is the removal of dirt, unwanted chemicals and biological contamination. Adding a powerful perfume does not necessarily make a surface—or the surrounding air—cleaner.
Perhaps clean shouldn’t smell like anything

There is something revealing about the fact that we now buy products to make our homes smell like forests, flowers and citrus groves.
Real freshness comes from fresh air—not from attempting to manufacture the smell of fresh air inside a sealed room.
