Why Drinking Enough Clean Water Matters More After 60

We spend years being told to listen to our body. That is generally good advice.

Unfortunately, after the age of 60, your body’s thirst alarm may become a little like an old doorbell. It still works, but sometimes not until the visitor has been standing outside for quite a while.

Older adults often feel less thirsty, even when their bodies need fluid. Kidney function can also change with age, reducing the body’s ability to conserve water as efficiently. Add hot Australian weather, medications, illness or difficulty getting to the kitchen, and dehydration can arrive surprisingly quickly.

This is why drinking sufficient clean water after 60 should become a regular habit—not something you do only when you feel thirsty.

Australian health guidance identifies older adults as being at greater risk of dehydration. The reasons include reduced thirst, changes in kidney function, limited mobility, memory difficulties and medicines such as diuretics and laxatives. Dehydration can contribute to dizziness, confusion, constipation and falls, and severe dehydration can become life-threatening.

Water is not a miracle cure. But it is a basic requirement for almost everything your body is trying to do.

What water actually does inside your body

Water is involved in digestion, nutrient absorption, circulation, temperature regulation and removing waste. It helps produce saliva, keeps the mouth comfortable and supports normal bowel and urinary function.

Your brain also depends on adequate hydration. Even mild dehydration may leave you feeling tired, headachy, irritable or less mentally sharp. In an older person, sudden confusion or unusual drowsiness can sometimes be a warning sign of significant dehydration or another medical problem.

Adequate fluid also helps keep stools softer and easier to pass. That matters because constipation becomes more common with age, particularly when people are less active, eat less fibre or take certain medications.

Your kidneys continuously filter the blood and regulate water and mineral balance. They need an appropriate supply of fluid, but “appropriate” is the important word. For most healthy people, regular water intake supports normal kidney and urinary function. For someone with advanced kidney failure, dialysis needs or certain heart conditions, too much fluid may be harmful. We will return to that important exception shortly.

## Why dehydration is easier after 60

Several small changes can combine to create a large problem.

You may not feel thirsty enough

Thirst becomes less reliable with age. Waiting until you feel parched is therefore not a dependable hydration plan.

The body holds a smaller fluid reserve

The proportion of the body made up of water generally declines with age. This means there may be less reserve available when you sweat, develop a fever or lose fluid through vomiting or diarrhoea.

Medicines can change fluid balance

Diuretics—sometimes called water tablets—help the body remove excess fluid and are commonly used for blood pressure, heart failure and swelling. Laxatives and some other medicines may also increase fluid loss or alter the body’s salt balance.

Never stop or change prescribed medicine on your own. If you frequently feel dizzy, dry-mouthed or unusually tired, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether medication could be contributing.

Mobility and continence concerns get in the way

Some people deliberately drink less because getting to the toilet is difficult or because they are worried about incontinence. Understandable? Absolutely. Safe? Not always.

The better answer may involve changing the timing of drinks, improving bathroom access and discussing continence treatment—not spending the day under-hydrated.

Hot weather and illness increase losses

Northern NSW where we reside can become hot and humid. Sweating increases water loss, even when you are sitting quietly. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea raise the risk further. Older adults may need prompting to drink during these periods because thirst may still lag behind the body’s needs.

How much should someone over 60 drink?

Australian Nutrient Reference Values give the same general adult fluid guide for people aged 51–70 and over 70:

– Men: about 2.6 litres of fluids a day—roughly 10 Australian cups.
– Women: about 2.1 litres of fluids a day—roughly 8 Australian cups.

These figures refer to fluids, including plain water, milk and other drinks. Food also supplies water—particularly fruit, vegetables, soups, yoghurt and similar foods.

This is guidance, not a compulsory water-drinking competition. Needs vary with body size, food intake, temperature, physical activity, illness and medication. Someone gardening on a hot day may need more than someone sitting indoors in cool weather.

More is not automatically better. Drinking extreme amounts quickly can dangerously dilute sodium in the blood. The sensible aim is regular hydration across the day.

Who should not follow the general target without advice?

This section is important.

Ask your doctor or healthcare team how much to drink if you have:

– Heart failure
– Advanced kidney disease or kidney failure
– Dialysis treatment
– Significant liver disease
– A problem involving low blood sodium
– A medically prescribed fluid restriction

People taking diuretics should also clarify their hydration plan if they are uncertain. A water tablet does not automatically mean “drink much more.” The correct amount depends on why the medicine was prescribed and how your heart, kidneys, blood pressure and electrolytes are responding.

Warning signs that you may need more fluid

Common signs of mild or moderate dehydration include:

– Dry mouth, lips or tongue
– Darker urine
– Urinating less often
– Headache
– Tiredness or weakness
– Dizziness, especially when standing
– Constipation
– Irritability or difficulty concentrating

Urine colour can be a useful rough guide. Pale straw-coloured urine usually suggests reasonable hydration, while consistently dark urine may mean you need more fluid. Vitamins, medicines and some foods can also alter urine colour, so it is not a perfect test.

Seek urgent medical attention for confusion, fainting, very little or no urine, rapid breathing, a fast heartbeat, very low blood pressure or an inability to keep fluids down. Sudden confusion in an older person should never be dismissed as “just age.”

Why the word “clean” matters

Drinking more water only helps when that water is safe.

Most Australian town water is treated, monitored and considered safe to drink. Water authorities test for microorganisms and chemical contaminants against the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Private water is a different matter. Rainwater tanks, bores, dams, rivers and creeks can be affected by bacteria, parasites, animal droppings, agricultural runoff, plumbing materials and naturally occurring chemicals. Clear water is not necessarily clean water. Some contaminants have no visible colour, taste or smell.

NSW Health advises that groundwater and surface water should not be used for drinking without appropriate testing and treatment, including disinfection. Rainwater tanks also require proper roof, gutter, screen and tank maintenance. People with weakened immune systems—and older adults who want to take extra care—may need boiled, appropriately filtered or otherwise verified safe water.

Boiling can kill many microorganisms, but it does not remove dissolved chemicals. In some circumstances, boiling may concentrate them. The treatment must match the actual problem.

Taste matters more than people admit

There is little value in setting a large jug of water on the table if nobody wants to drink it.

Chlorine taste, odour, sediment or old plumbing can make people avoid tap water and reach instead for soft drink, juice or simply nothing. Effective filtration may improve taste and make regular water consumption easier.

That does not mean every household needs the most complicated or expensive system available. Town water, rainwater and bore water present different challenges. The right system depends on what is actually in the water and what you want to reduce.

8. If night-time toilet trips are a problem, drink more earlier in the day and less close to bedtime rather than restricting fluids all day.

Tea, coffee, milk and soup contribute fluid. Plain water remains the simplest everyday choice because it contains no sugar, kilojoules or alcohol. Alcohol can increase dehydration risk and is not a hydration strategy, however convincingly a cold beer may argue otherwise.

Make clean water an automatic habit

After 60, the goal is not to force litres of water into yourself. It is to avoid quietly drifting into dehydration because thirst no longer gives an early warning.

Drink regularly. Pay attention to changes in urine, energy, dizziness, bowel habits and mental clarity. Increase fluids during heat or illness when appropriate. Make sure private water supplies are properly tested and treated. And if your water tastes unpleasant, deal with the reason rather than accepting that you simply “don’t like water.”

Most importantly, check with your healthcare professional if you have heart or kidney disease, take diuretics or have ever been told to restrict fluids.

Clean water is not a miracle treatment. It is something less exciting and more useful: one of the foundations upon which the body’s everyday work depends.
